Once the heart of the ancient Lanna Kingdom, Chiang Mai has been a cultural center for more than 700 years. Inside the Old City alone you’ll find narrow streets, traditional wooden houses, and over 90 historic temples. You could easily spend weeks exploring them all.
To help you choose, here are some of our favourite and most interesting temples and cultural highlights.
1. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
Perched high above Chiang Mai, this temple offers some of the best panoramic views in Northern Thailand. It’s considered one of the most sacred temples in the country. Ask any local about the white elephant legend connected to the temple’s founding. Everyone knows it.
2. Wat Phra Singh
Often called the “Temple of the Lion Buddha,” Wat Phra Singh is one of Chiang Mai’s most important monasteries. It features stunning Lanna-style architecture and an ornate, mosaic-inlaid sanctuary.
3. Wat Chedi Luang
This impressive temple complex is home to a massive Lanna-style chedi that once stood more than 80 meters tall. The temple grounds are atmospheric and spacious, and daily monk chats give visitors a chance to ask questions about Buddhism and Thai culture.
4. Wat Chiang Man
The oldest temple in Chiang Mai, dating back to the city’s founding in 1296. It houses important ancient Buddha images and a beautiful elephant-lined chedi.

Built on a former royal flower garden in the 14th century, Wat Suan Dok features a large open-air campus, a striking golden chedi, and some of the most popular monk chat programs in Chiang Mai.

Entirely covered in hand-crafted silver and aluminum panels, Wat Sri Suphan is an incredible example of traditional Chiang Mai silversmithing. Located near the Saturday Night Market, it’s especially captivating when lit up in the evening.

Located about 45 minutes outside the city, Wat Ban Den is one of the largest and most visually impressive temples in Northern Thailand. The complex includes striking blue buildings, ornate wooden structures, and a panoramic hilltop setting.
